While some may think asbestos contamination is a thing of the past, the reality is asbestos still poses a threat. Recently a makeup product sold by Justice, a children and tween store popular among young girls, tested positive for traces of asbestos. Asbestos is a natural, though hazardous, mineral that can cause various diseases when inhaled. Although asbestos was known to be a huge problem in the 1970’s and 1980’s, the mineral is still found in certain products today.
Asbestos was mostly used in industrial products initially. However, some cosmetic products contain a mineral called Talc, which can be contaminated with asbestos fibers. Products like the ”Just Shimmer Shine Powder” makeup sold in Justice stores, for example, could contain traces of asbestos and other dangerous chemicals because of the use of Talc, which was untested for the presence of asbestos during production by the manufacturer. When inhaled, the fibers in asbestos can become trapped in the lungs, which may cause a person to develop mesothelioma, a type of cancer. While this is the most common disease caused by asbestos exposure, the dangerous mineral can also cause lung, colon, prostate, breast, or ovarian cancers.
In response to finding asbestos in their makeup, Justice immediately discontinued all sales of the “Just Shimmer Shine Powder.” The store claims they conducted their own investigation, and that a third party lab found no trace of asbestos in their makeup products.
